Best Albums of 2011

Two thousand and eleven for me was the year of the podcast. I went from listening to one podcast for about four years, to this year I’m listening to about a one thousand and eleven different podcasts. At least.

Maybe it was less, because I thought I had listened to no new music this year. All my memories of this year are the sounds of people talking into microphones. But when I went through all the music from 2011 it turns out I listened to plenty. The interesting (not that interesting) thing was only four bands/artists on this are bands/artists I started listening to the year (not including side projects, collaborations, etc).

Obviously I wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to make music fight other music for the win, which is the main reason I decided to make this list. Of course I don’t expect anyone to care. I’m having a very difficult time with the caring of this whole process. I really just thought it would be a good idea to document what I have been listening to and enjoying within this year so I’ll have something to read on my deathbed.

First off, in no specific order, a few EPs and such that I would like to mention

Davis – Davis (ep)
Future Islands – Before the Bridge (single)
Dom – Family of Love (ep)
Will Johnson – Little Raider (ep)
Childish Gambino – EP (ep)
Grandaddy – Sophtware Slump (Deluxe Edition)
Calexico – Selections from Road Atlas 1998-2011

Here we go. Starting off at number 38. There were other albums that deserve to be on this list, but honestly.. I can’t count any higher.

38. Battles – Glass Drop
Fun

37. Shabazz Palaces – Black Up
I enjoyed this album quite a bit when I first heard it, then I lost interest. It’s still very quite original sounding, that’s why it makes the list at 37. The fifth highest number I know (if fractions count).

36. Old 97′s – The Grand Theater Volume 2
Great local Dallas, Tejas band still at it.

35. The Rosebuds – Loud Planes Fly Low

34. Wilco – The Whole Love
I’m going to be honest, which is what I have been doing- not that I haven’t won’t been not will doing it. But I thought I would be clear that I will and have been not being anything but completely and definitely been quite honest but. Won’t you or won’t you not listen to my words that are being written by me for you with honesty. And.
This album is very disappointing after the amazing first track. Thank you for reading what I just have wrote in the past presently.

33. Childish Gambino – Camp
Not as good as Cornrnunity. I like it though.

32. Hail Mary Mallon – Are You Gonna Eat That?

31. Woods – Sun and Shade
One thing to note is how good at counting backwards I’m getting.

30. Her Space Holiday – Her Space Holiday

29. The Mountain Goats – All Eternals Deck
I had to think about that one!

28. Akron/Family – S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT

27. Twilight Singers – Dynamite Steps
Greg Dulli is still alive.

26. Hella – Tripper
This one was quite unexpectedly good.

25. Smith Westerns – Dye It Blonde
I’m not going to justify myself. This is where I decided to place this musical album within this musical album list.

24. Alias – Fever Dream
Electronic music.

23. Open Mike Eagle – Rappers Will Die of Nature Causes

22. Calhoun – Heavy Sugar
Good local Fort Worth, Tejas music

21. Handsome Furs – Sound Kapital
Have I made it clear that there will only be music on this list? If you want my favorite movies or books then keep hitting F5 until I decide to add them.

20. Parts & Labor – Constant Future
More like Sound KRAPital. This album is so obviously one higher than the previous album on this list. (This list of music.)

19. Peter and the Wolf – Easy Mountain
Lately I’ve been very aware of myself saying “I feel”. I’ve been trying my best to not say things like “I feel like” or “I feel that.” I have not yet been able to make anyone else stop either.
I feel that this album would be much higher if it didn’t just come out ten days ago (from when this was posted, not ten days from when you read this). But I can’t predict the future so I feel like this is the best place to put this on this list as of this time. I’ll revise this list as soon as I learn WordPress.

18. Moonface – Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I’d Hoped

Moonface not Sunset Rubdown like I hoped. Of course I’m kidding. Second Wolf Parade-related diss today. I’m on fire like NBA Jam.

17. Yuck – Yuck

Check the next blog entry for a top 10 list of bands that Yuck sounds like.

16. Say Hi – Um, Uh Oh
If you ever see Say Hi live, make sure to ask them why they changed their name.

15. Boris – New Album/Attention Please
I decided to “push them together” as they say and combine both of these albums. They are quite different even though they share many of the same songs (different versions though). Boris put out so music this year, I haven’t gotten around to giving Klatter and Heavy Rocks (2011) good listens. But from what I’ve heard, good.

14. St. Vincent – Strange Mercy
More great local Tejas music.

13. Blackout Beach – Fuck Death
Blackout Beach not Frog eyes like I hoped.

12. The War on Drugs – Slave Ambient
BAM! 97x. The FUTURE of rock ‘n roll.

11. Radiohead – The King Of Limbs

10. Serengeti – Family & Friends
BAM! Baaammmmmm Double You Oh Ex Why Dot Commmmmm

9. Kurt Vile – Smoke Ring For My Halo

8. Centro-matic – Candidate Waltz
Wonderful Denton, Tejas music

7. Astronautalis – This is Our Science
He used to live in Tejas. Also the only white rapper in this list I believe. What a sad year for me and my friends at Stormfront.org

6. Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – Mirror Traffic
I would love to listen to this album again sometime in the future. BAM.

5. 13 & God – Own Your Own Ghost
I JUST realized that Doseone is white. I never knew that before I wrote the previous sentence that is contained within this blog entry and within HankLepstein.com.

4. Seryn – This is Where We Are
Wow! Shocking! You were probably wondering, ‘where is Seryn on this list.’ Well you finally found it. Can you believe it made it to this number on this list and that this is a number that is one of the numbers I’m capable of counting to? Great new Tejas band.

3. Destroyer – Kaputt
I was just thinking the other day in the car how listenable Destroyer is. All of his music really, not just this album. Could you turn off a Destroyer song? Comment below

2. Future Islands – On The Water
Thank you for scrolling past everything I wrote and then reading what I consider to be the best album of the year, then looking up to see the second best album. You may now hit the X on the top right corner of your screen.

1. Tha Grimm Teachaz – There’s a Situation on the Homefront
You may be wondering who Tha Grimm Teachaz are. You may want to try Wikipedia.
You would get this answer: “Did you mean Tha Grimm Teacher?” Which you would respond yes by clicking. Then you would get this response: “Did you mean the gym teacher?” Curious, you would click on that. It’s possible Brett of Hanklepstein.com meant to write The Gym Teacher and not Tha Grimm Teachaz. Anyways, what you’ll get is a description of episode 19 of season one of the CBS sitcom The Nanny. Here is said description:
“Maggie hates her gym teacher, but Fran says she cannot be even close to as bad as her old gym teacher, so Fran recommends her to fake an injury to get out of class. This works for a while, until the teacher reveals that Maggie must pass a fitness test or get a failing grade. Fran decides to drop in on the teacher, only to discover that it is her teacher from years ago (guest star Rita Moreno) Fran trains Maggie for the test, and both of them fail horribly. In the end, the teacher starts choking, and Fran saves her life in exchange for a passing grade. Meanwhile, Maxwell is in a similar problem when an uncouth actor he worked for in the past becomes the star of his new play and starts making absurd terms. Luckily, following Fran’s advice, he manages to stand up to his star and get him under control. ”

Thank you for reading my blog and thank you for loving yourself.
